The province of Cadiz, a natural paradise

Cadiz has something that makes us all fall in love: its people, its history, its traditions… everyone has something that catches their attention. But do you know the natural paradises found in the province? Today we will explain three natural parks in the province of Cadiz. A natural paradise!

GRAZALEMA MOUNTAIN RANGE

This natural park is located northeast of the province of Cadiz, and has been declared a Biosphere Reserve by Unesco. It stands out for being an area of special protection for birds, as it is home to the griffon vulture, which has one of the largest nesting colonies in Europe.

Sierra de Grazalema is characterized for being a very rainy park (it has the highest rainfall index of the peninsula), and grows there the best pinsapar of the country, a plant relic of the tertiary period, authentic living fossil, which grows only above 1,000 m. height.

For those of you who are visiting the province, this is undoubtedly one of the must-see natural parks.

LOS ALCORNOCALES Park

The natural park of Los Alcornocales is a natural park declared by the Parliament of Andalusia in 1989. This protected natural area comprises a large south-north oriented strip between the coastal area of Tarifa, in the Strait of Gibraltar, to the inland mountains, in the municipalities of Cortes de la Frontera, Ubrique and El Bosque.

With a surface area of 167,767 ha, it is one of the largest natural parks in Spain.

Most of the natural park belongs to the province of Cádiz and only part of it belongs to the province of Málaga, with territory of 18 different municipalities, Alcalá de los Gazules, Algar, Algeciras, Arcos de la Frontera, Benalup-Casas Viejas, Benaocaz, Castellar de la Frontera, El Bosque, Jerez de la Frontera, Jimena de la Frontera, Los Barrios, Medina Sidonia, Prado del Rey, San José del Valle, San Roque, Tarifa, Ubrique and Cortes de la Frontera and a total population of about 380,000 people.

Almost all of its territory is occupied by forest masses of native Mediterranean forest, with very different uses, forestry, livestock, hunting, mushroom and heather gathering, although the most notable is its cork production.

Its variety of landscapes, fauna and vegetation of Mediterranean and riparian type are exceptional at Iberian level, as well as its cultural heritage.

Strait of Gibraltar Natural Park

The main feature of the Del Estrecho National Park is that it is a national park. maritime-terrestrial. This park is marked by cliffs and abrasion platforms on one side of Tarifa and sandy beaches on the other. Faro Camarinal lighthouse, you can enjoy beautiful views of the sea and the coast; inland, from the Silla del Papa, you can see the countryside of La Janda and the sierras of the south of Cadiz.

If you visit this park, it is essential that you visit one of these five mostimportant points:

1. Guadalmesí Observatory: where the migratory flows of birds through the Strait of Gibraltar can be appreciated.

2. Cerro del Tambor viewpoint: this viewpoint allows us to appreciate the cliffs and the points of the coastal front of the eastern end of the Natural Park of the Strait.

3. Observatory of the Port of Bolonia: this observatory is located in the natural pass that forms the Port of Bolonia.

4. Cueva del Moro viewpoint: The Mirador de la Cueva del Moro offers one of the widest views of the Natural Park of the Strait: the Natural Park of Los Alcornocales to the left, in front, the Cerro de San Bartolomé, and to the right the confluence of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean in the Strait, and Africa beyond.

5. Mirador Monte Camarinal: from here the panoramic views follow a route that begins on the left at the Cerro de San Bartolomé del Monte Betis and approaches the inlet of Bolonia, revealing the crest of the Dune buried in the pine forest.


LA BREÑA AND BARBATE MARSHES

The Parque Natural de la Breña y Marismas del Barbate is a protected natural area located in the municipalities of Barbate, on the Atlantic coast of the province of Cadiz (Spain).

Protects the pine forest from Breña, between Los Caños de Meca and Barbate, along with the cliffs and the maritime strip that borders it, as well as the marshes of the Barbate river, which extend from La Barca de Vejer up to the mouth of the river, bordering the hills of the sierra del Retín.

In addition, in 2005 the areas known as Monte Marismas, Monte Quebradas and Peña Cortada, belonging to the municipality of Vejer de la Frontera, were added.

We can also say that it is located halfway between The Bay of Cadiz y The StraitThis area, halfway between the waters of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, contains a magnificent diversity that occupies the once extinct lagoon of La Janda, which, along with other smaller ones, came to form one of the largest wetlands in Europe until it was drained in the mid-twentieth century.

Today they share the scenery of marshes, rice fields, pastures, dunes ( Hierbabuena Beach ) and pine forests, such as La Breña, which overlooks the cliff, a tremendous 90-meter cliff that extends along a stretch of up to six kilometers of coastline.

Close to the coast, small and intimate coves, totem poles such as Trafalgar or the famous corrals, stone enclosures used as fishing gear since Phoenician and Roman times, give rise to meadows of phanerogams where the light penetrates crystal clear turquoise waters.
